Vico Magistretti
Simplicity as a Form of Elegance
Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century Italian architecture and design. A Milanese architect and designer, he developed a distinctive language based on simplicity of form, functionality and the pursuit of essential design solutions.
His approach stemmed from the belief that a good project should be expressible through a clear idea. Clean lines, essential forms and an innovative use of materials define objects and furniture designed to become a natural part of everyday life.
Among his most celebrated works is the Eclisse lamp (1965) for Artemide, awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1967. Other icons of his work include the Carimate chair (1959), the Maralunga sofa (1973) for Cassina, and the Atollo lamp (1977) for Oluce.
Through collaborations with Artemide, Cassina, Oluce and Schiffini, Magistretti helped define an enduring vision of Italian design, where innovation, function and formal quality coexist with apparent simplicity.
