Joe Colombo
Future, Function and New Ways of Living
Joe Colombo (1930–1971) was one of the most visionary figures in twentieth-century Italian design. A designer and innovator, he interpreted the Space Age aesthetic through futuristic forms, plastic materials and flexible solutions, imagining new ways of living and organising domestic space.
His work combined technological experimentation, ergonomics and modularity. Objects and furniture were designed to adapt to people and spaces, moving beyond the traditional idea of static furniture and anticipating a dynamic, transformable approach to living.
Among his most celebrated designs are the Elda armchair, the Tube Chair and the Boby trolley, originally produced by Bieffeplast. For Oluce, he designed the Spider lamp, awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1967, while for Arnolfo di Cambio he created the Smoke glassware series, characterised by its distinctive asymmetrical stem.
Despite his remarkably short career, Joe Colombo left a lasting mark on international design, transforming experimentation, function and visions of the future into a language that remains instantly recognisable today.
